On Software Product Lines, Customer-Configured Products and Eco-Systems

Abstract
The notion of reusing software assets is about as old as the field of software engineering. However, it has taken until the 1990s until a successful approach to intra-organizational reuse really was formulated explicitly, leading to the notion of software product lines. However, when studying the ways software product lines evolve, two main trends can be recognized. The first is the continuous demand for increased variability provided by the software in product line as well as the delayed binding time of the points of variation, leading to increasingly customer-configured products. The second trend is that companies increasingly open up their product lines to allow for extensions by 3rd parties and customers and aim to create an eco-system around their product line. The presentation starts with introducing the notion of software product lines and then continues to discuss the challenges around organizational adoption of software product lines. Subsequently, the implications of the aforementioned trends are explored. Several examples of companies that operate in the space of software product lines, customer-configurable products and eco-systems will be discussed.
